For September 1: Journal One

Your first blog post is due tomorrow. Remember that you're aiming for 350-400 words on the following: What is writing & what does it do? Create a list of 5-8 key terms that define writing.

22 comments:

  1. To me, writing conveys what pictures, videos, and sometimes even spoken words cannot. These days, I find that I am able to better express myself by writing things down than I am by speaking them aloud. Writing is a way to engage a reader, even without photos or videos, and to even cause them to create own images of what they are reading themselves. I have been so caught up in novels before that I didn't even realize I was making a movie in my head. Writing has always been a personal, and meaningful way to convey information, whether it be an expression of emotions or a way to deliver news or an invitation. Writing is used for everything, just as I am using writing right now to define writing.

    Communication
This word is most appropriate to me for describing writing because it is mainly used as a form of communication. An author communicates to its readers, one person communicates to another in a text, and so on.

    Expression
Writing is used as a form of expression. You express your thoughts and feelings through writing in a journal, or writing a text or email to family or friends. It is also used to bring out expression of emotions in the readers of novels and stories.

    Description
This word is mainly important when photos and videos and other things are involved in an article, magazine or book. Words are used to express what photos can not, so they work as an aid to further enhance the experience for the reader.

    Understand
When given the chance to sit down and write things down, it gives you the time and clarity to express things better than when they are spoken. Writing things down provide a better understanding and view of things happening around us.

    Convey
Lately, everything is written and displayed on social media. Every time something happens, stories are posted to Facebook and people are writing articles about it. Each person uses writing to differently convey their angle on the story. People use writing to convey information and explain their opinions and sway their readers to think the same as them.

  2. Writing is probably the hardest thing in all of existence to do "properly." Anyone can write a word on a page, but the ability to take words and put them into a format that not only appeals to the audience but also expressed their own style and clarifies their purpose for writing in the first place? That's nearly impossible. However, I stress "nearly" in this matter because nothing is impossible in this world when it comes to the written word. Writing is the ability to put one's entire thoughts onto a page without fear or hesitation, at least when done unprofessionally. Everyone is a "writer" in that they could write about the people that they saw today on their walk, write their own personal review of a terrible movie they saw, and all kinds of different things, the sky is the limit. Writing, however, is still an art since it is almost never perfect- writing shows the flaws and perfections of every living being. See, a reader can criticize a world famous book and that criticism holds just as much weight as the billions of scholars who praise it- why? Because writing grants a different experience for each and every person, and it can show what they are interested in, what they hate, what makes them intrigued in this world that the writing is establishing, etc. All in all, writing shows the true self of the creator since they are putting their own experiences and opinions into every page, but writing also unveils the truths of the audience since they all can show different opinions on the same wall of text- it unearths that which is hidden in every individual, no matter how simple the text is.

Style- Every bit of writing is diverse in its own way, no matter how similar or "robotic" some texts may seem. The style of one's writing can be established in the way they split their paragraphs, the way their characters speak in a story, even to the way that they end their chapters. Style is limitless since everyone has their own unique fashion of writing, so style is to be defined as exactly how the story or description is written. Is it serious? Is it slang-driven? Who knows, it's the author's style alone.

Personality- A true writer puts their heart and soul into every word they write, from big reveals to transitional phrases, the writing always reveals something within the author of the work. Personality is usually what drives the author to create their work in the first place, such as how someone who loves heavy metal and guts and gore probably isn't going to write something like "Marley and Me" any time soon. Personality is what guides the text and allows them to choose exactly what to put on the page.

Goal- All writing is done for a reason, be it to teach a lesson or to just share an experience. No matter what it is, the author took the time out of their day to write with purpose. A goal is what exactly the author aims to do for their audience or even for themselves if the writing is possibly therapeutic to them.

Experience- Whether it is just a short description of a movie or an entire philosophy textbook, writing is an experience for both the audience and the creator. All writing grants different experiences for everyone, whether they bore them to death and cause them to drool all over the textbook or they make them tremble in anticipation as they read about the upcoming musical album of their favorite band.

Connection- When a writer is brave enough to show their work to others no matter how big or small the bit of text is, they are establishing a bridge with the reader. Since they are pouring their thoughts onto a page for anyone to see, there is a sort of trust that bonds the creator with the audience and allows them to understand each other.

  3. Writing can be a vague and complicated term to define specifically. In my opinion, writing is the process of conveying messages and meanings so that other people can understand them. Writing allows people to voice their opinions and knowledge so that it can be shared and analyzed by others. By putting something in writing, it becomes more valuable and meaningful than just spoken words. Words that are written down and are concrete are able to be analyzed and studied. Written words also can give a lot of detail to a story, whereas details can sometimes be missed in videos or audio clips. Writing is an important part of everyday life, as it allows us to communicate with people from all over the world and ideas and thoughts can be shared more easily.

Audience- the audience is who the written words are intended to be for. The audience can dictate how the writer presents their words, because sometimes words are formatted a certain way to appeal to the intended audience.

Detail- One of the main advantages of writing is the ability to add detail to the story. The words allow for more information to be conveyed, and the reader can examine the details as often as desired.

Voice- Each writer has their own voice that shows through in their words. The added detail and words allows for the writer to properly convey their thoughts and opinions the way they intended. The special thing about writing is that there are no strict guidelines that everyone must follow, each person is allows to write in their own unique way.

Context- the context that surrounds a word or phrase can play a huge role in understanding the meaning of it. Context refers to the surrounding details that a writer provides in their work. Context can help a reader understand the over-arching themes the writer is trying to convey.

Meaning- Each writer provides a meaning to every page that wasn't present before they put their ideas into words. Meaning is what the author creates for other people to understand.

  4. Writing is one of the most ancient forms of communication and expression. Writing is not limited to one race, culture, or language. Humans have used it for thousands of years in order to communicate with others across vast lands and oceans. However, writing is not used solely for the purpose of communication. Writing also serves as a means of self-expression. Many people feel that they must transform their thoughts and feelings onto a concrete and visual medium and writing allows those thoughts to become visual and real. Although the thoughts someone writes down become visible when written, that does not always mean that person ever wants it to be seen by someone else. Writing allows humans to express their thoughts and feelings and if they choose to do so, to be read by other people. Writing is now a substantial part of humans’ everyday lives and without it we would not be able to convey and understand others’ thoughts and feelings. Conversation is a great means of communication; however, without recordings, talking cannot be carried across miles like writing can. Nowadays, we use writing for expression, communication, business, and pleasure. There is not one aspect of our lives unaffected by writing and that is what makes it a vital part of our existence.

    1. Information: We use writing in many ways to convey to others facts and information. We create formats such as brochures, PowerPoint’s, websites, newspapers, magazines, and much more in order to convey facts to others about certain subjects and events

    2. Communication: This is one of the most popular ways to use writing. It can be argued that writing was probably first created so that people could communicate with each other.

    3. Description: Writing is also attributed to description. Without description in writing, it would be a lot less elaborate and detailed. Description is a great way to better convey someone’s true insight and feelings on a subject, person, or event.

    4. Persuading: When it comes to business, writing is used mostly for conveying facts and persuading people to invest or buy in a product or company. Persuasion in writing can also be used by someone to sway other people’s minds about a certain topic or viewpoint.

    5. Expression: Similarly to communication, expression is one of the most popular and universal reasons for writing. Humans love to express their thoughts and feelings especially to others. Expression is a way to separate the interests and passions of one person to another.

  5. To give a simplified definition of writing, one could say it is the use of documented words to express an idea or opinion. "Expression" is a key word that I automatically associate with writing because most authors, poets, lyricists, and debaters use the written word to make known their thoughts or feelings about a particular subject. To be brutally honest, I've never considered myself to be proficient at writing, and it has always discouraged me from taking an initiative in poetry or fiction writing, although they peak my interest frequently. Although, the deeper I dive into my EWM major, the more I realize that understanding what writing is and how it's developed over history gives you a different perspective on the concept as a whole, and has since instilled motivation in me to try my hand once more. Another key term I tend to associate with writing is "purpose". I feel as if most, if not all, writers have a reason or motivation behind what they produce, which is why word choice plays a crucial part in the process of creation. "Organization" is yet another term that goes hand in hand with writing. Without putting your words into a specific order that makes sense to your reader, your message will be almost impossible to convey. If you simply threw a bunch of words onto a piece of paper, it would obviously make no sense and thus get nothing accomplished. On another note, "visibility" is a term that assists in the definition of writing. When you are making marks on a paper that convey an idea or opinion, you are making it visible. It's no longer only a thought, but an extension of that thought that is documented for the possibility of others to see and analyze. Granted, some write for solely themselves, without letting anyone view their product, but they are still making it visible to themselves. To round out my personal definition of writing, I would say that it could be considered a "symbol". By organizing a particular set of words and marking them on a medium, you are giving meaning to them.

  6. Defining writing is weird. It is the piece of lead in a pencil making contact with paper and drawing words. Duh, right? Not really. Beyond this literal description of writing, writing has an essence-that part that cannot be easily described, but rather given various titles and purposes. These include communication, articulation, socialization, organization and expression. For me, the purpose of writing has always evolved and changed upon circumstance and necessity. Growing up, around my middle school years, I probably only considered writing an academic activity, with school mandated essays and reports. I never considered the communication (1: writing to send a message or idea) aspect of writing. For example, at this same preteen age, I would hand write letters to my grandmother who lived in the Pennsylvania countryside-quite a distance from the suburb in Miami where I grew up. Although there was obviously the occasional phone call, my grandmother always seemed to prefer the letters. In hindsight, these letters were my initiation into true writing-crafting thoughts that could articulate (2: writing to describe what seems indescribable) what I felt and saw, as well as phrases that communicated ideas and musings. Although I still primarily wrote in an academic sense in high school, this was the advent of texting for me. My elegant thoughts from junior high were no more. Writing in texts and emails introduced a new form of shorthand, writing to get straight to the point within the context of socializing (3: writing to communicate casually). Writing is not always so glamorous, however, as it can also be practical and used as a very technical skill. As a current college student, I find that my writing is mostly organizational (4: differentiating thoughts and objects) with creating literal labels and lists and checklists for homework, grocery shopping, chores, etc. The letters I write to stick on the fridge with a magnet to express and articulate my thoughts about what the apartment needs to my roommates are far different from the musing filled letters to my grandmother many years before. Despite these distinct purposes for writing, however, one term comes to mind as a near-to-perfect description of what writing is-expression. Expression (5: thought in someone's mind to words on a page) is writing in its purest form, because it answers why we write at all: to express ourselves.

  7. Writing is essentially a means of communication. The reason that the alphabet even exists is so that ideas and information can be recorded and shared in a language that a multitude of people can understand. As humans, writing was a natural development that stemmed from our socially involved nature. Although it may have started out being used mainly as a means of keeping records, now its uses are infinitely vast. Aside from being a common method of communication and idea sharing, writing is also an outlet for creativity and self-expression. Writing brings clarity to what we are thinking and how we are feeling, in a way that allows people to better understand each other.

    Purpose-
Every piece of writing has a purpose, or an intent that the author is trying to fulfill. Whether it is to inform, persuade, or entertain an audience, the purpose of a piece is essentially the reason why the author bothered to write anything at all.

    Message-
Intangibly connected to the author’s purpose, the message within a written piece is what the author is trying to get across to the audience. The message of the piece is what the author wants the audience to take away after reading; whether it be information, an idea, or an opinion.

    Tone-
The tone within a piece of writing communicates the underlying emotion behind the topic, without outright stating it. Through word selection and sentence structure, the author can influence what types of emotions the reader feels while reading.

    Medium-
The platform through which the piece is written, helps the author to get their message and intent across to an audience most effectively. There are many different mediums that can be used, and each one can have a different effect on a particular audience. Through picking specific mediums for specific pieces, the platform can be tailored to what the author is trying to say, and who they are trying to say it to.

    Genre-
Genre is a means of separating and classifying different types of writing in a way that everyone can understand. Through this system of classification, readers can more easily search for the type of writing they are looking for, and authors can give a simplified label to their writing so that readers better understand what they are about to read.

  8. Writing is a way in which we can communicate with others and ourselves. By writing, we can communicate with many different people without actually having to speak to them. For example, a journalist can write an article on a current event and share that article with numerous people by simply publishing it. Not only can writing be used to communicate about what is happening in the present, but it can also be used to share ideas from the past. Because writing exists, there is a way to immortalize an idea or story, and there is an almost endless supply of knowledge and stories for us to read. Lastly, writing is a way to communicate with ourselves. Journaling is not the only way to do this; there are other ways we can communicate with ourselves through writing, such as free writing to generate new ideas.

    Communication
As I stated above, the main purpose of writing is to communicate with others or with ourselves. There are many different ways to communicate through writing, including telling a story, persuading someone to think a certain way, informing someone on a certain topic, and more.

    Self-Expression
I think an important part of writing is self-expression. Writing is an art, and whether it is a novel, a song, a play, or a poem, an writer had to come up with the idea and create it. Most of the time, this idea probably came from something from the writer's life. Many people also get tattoos of words or phrases that are important to them, which is another form of writing as self-expression.

    Audience
No matter what type of composition is being written, the writer always has to consider the audience before writing it. The audience greatly influences the writer's tone and word-choice. Someone writing a children's book would want to use simple language and a happy tone, whereas someone writing a poem may want to have a despondent tone and use figurative language.

    Genre
Genre is also important when it comes to writing because the writer must find the most effective genre to communicate his/her message. A storyteller should probably try to publish a book instead of trying to publish it in a newspaper, just as a non-fiction writer should probably not try to communicate his/her message through a poem.

    Criticism
As I said before, writing is an art. Like any other type of art, any piece of writing will be criticized. It is important for writers to understand that there will always be people who like and dislike the same composition and that there will always be positive and negative comments on it.

  9. Writing is a form of communication and a way to individually express oneself, relaying a variety of different messages established by the author and influenced by the audience it tries to reach out to. It is a form of establishing connections with others and bridging the gaps found within society, while sharing information, entertaining, and/or persuading. Sometimes, what pictures and videos cannot properly relay, writing is able to. For me, writing is a way of escaping reality and submerging myself into a story that can either be factual or fantasy.

Communication: As previously mentioned, writing serves as a form of communication. What spoken words cannot relay, writing is able to. In a world that is constantly advancing, writing will always serve as a medium in which others can relay information to one another and feel connected.

Tone: The tone of writing can change depending on who the audience is, or even the story that is being told through these words. Despite the fact that you cannot hear the physical tone of writing, the way it is set up by the author can help a reader interpret what it is exactly.

Create: I believe this is the most important word of all when it comes to writing because there are thousands and thousands of words that can come together and create millions and millions of writing pieces that are each unique and different from one another. Even if they belong to the same genre, no two pieces of writing will be exactly identical, and will all have their own personal touch to it.

Purpose: Depending on the author and the audience, writing will serve a different purpose. It can inform, persuade, entertain, or even explain. Oftentimes, the purpose of the writing will reflect a certain individuality of the author and give an insight into their thought process and their reason for writing a certain piece.

Access: Communication and access go hand in hand when it comes to writing because it offers an abundance of information that can reach people worldwide, no matter their location. Without writing, access to certain news would not be possible and individuals would be uniformed of what is going on within their local community, and even globally.

  10. Writing is such a basic necessity, that I think people forget how amazing and magical it truly is. I think there is so much more to writing than the textbook definition of what it is. Essentially writing is a means to express your self or convey information to an intended audience. However, writing can be so much more than that. Writing can be used as an outlet from daily life and struggles, it can be used to create art such as literature, it can be a vessel used to express different emotion, and it can even be turned into a whole career. I don’t know if I’d be the same person without the authors that turned their dreams into reality by making a career out of writing stories.

Expression: Writing is primarily used to express emotion. It can be in the form of a journal entry, a rant on facebook, a subtweet on twitter, a direct tweet on twitter, or even just a text to a friend. Emotion can also be expressed in literature through all of the character’s voices/thoughts.

Communication: Apart from speaking, writing is a person’s main form of communication. Writing is used to communicate factual information, share ideas, express opinions, and so much more. Communication and expression are the primary reasons why writing is everything.

Audience: The way in which one phrases and presents their ideas is hugely dependent upon who the audience is and what the motive behind their writing is. The composition, style, and tone is effected by the intended audience.

Motive: A writer’s motive behind their writing will completely influence their writing style and tone. If a writer is writing for an audience, there will always be an either clear motive or a hidden motive behind their writing.

Style/Tone: I think style and tone go hand in hand, which is why I decided to just combine them. The style and tone of one’s writing is what their “voice” is composed of. The way in which one writes is their style and how they want their voice to be interpreted is their tone. These two aspects of writing are usually always dependent on each other.

  11. Writing is the most important format in which we document all kinds of information. Words in writing can range from something as simple as reading the directions on a cake batter box, to the Declaration of independence written by some of our founding fathers. Beyond writing being used for documenting words, writing can also be a platform for many emotional situations to be addressed. Examples of this could be an author who experienced a tragedy and found healing through writing their story down, other cases could involve a personal diary to jot down thoughts and feelings if its too hard to share with others. Whatever your reasoning, writing will always play a role in our everyday human lives.

    To me, writing is…

Writing is Expression. Writing is ultimately the most sought after way of expressing yourself. Whether it’s something as simple as keeping a personal diary or writing a paper on a speech on something you’re passionate about. I believe expression is the basis of what separates individuals from others, without it there would be no variation in the words we write about.

Writing is Access. Technological advances alone have increased audience sizes. For example, the internet. The internet was something that didn’t exist a few years ago, but now with cites such as Google that allow for writers to publish all kinds of work that anyone can access from around the world at the touch of a button. The role that media plays in writing in today’s world is that it allows for more words to be read by much larger audience bases. The more individuals who are able to access your work the more that read it and learn from it.

Writing is Medium. Media plays a large role in writing in the sense that it gets the words read. Different kinds of newer media such as social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat have boomed in recent years as the most instant and up to date media. Hence, a quicker way for your words to meet all kinds of readers and audiences everywhere. A few years ago, if asked, most people would probably say that they received their news from the newspaper or television. Now, checking the weather on Google.com has become a regular routine for myself.

Writing is Style. The way that an individual phrases together words and how those combination of words effect audiences is what creates the aroma of having a particular style. Style in writing can be the certain layout you choose to incorporate your words into. Style can also be your particular way of forming together words to effect certain emotions in audiences. Your style of writing represents your voice as an author, and without a passionate and informing voice audiences will not always spark an interest for your writing.

Writing is Audience. Reaching out to audiences is always the most crucial task in my opinion, if there is no audience interested in the words you are writing then where is the meaning behind them. Writing can be personal and not always intended for audiences, but, usually a writer’s main objective is to have a vast and large amount of individuals reading their words.

  13. Writing is an artistic form of communication. Writing in my opinion, is very aesthetic. A few words listed on a basic advertisement piece can paint a colorful picture in our minds, resulting in us following up on the product being advertised. Writing is and can be very literal or it can have connotation. It’s beautiful, words can be concrete, while everyone may not convey the same emotion it might convey for someone else. We use writing as a form of language to establish relationships, to build bridges, gain knowledge, and is a fantastic form of entertainment. Writing is also used to persuade others, which could either be positive or negative. Basically, writing is a powerful tool in society that needs to be utilized.

    Communication
We use writing to communicate in everyday situations, wether it’s writing a love letter to your bae, or Barack Obama addressing the United Nations. Communication is key to build and gain relationships. It informs and acknowledges.

    Audience
How can one communicate if there is no audience to communicate too. The audience makes the rhetor; vice versa.

    Genre
Genre creates niches for writer or people in general which make it more relatable to understand and perceive.

    Tone
Genre sets up the tone of a piece that generates specific emotion.

    Medium
Mediums are used to get the writers point across. It is a good outlet to reach out to many people who also share the same views or opinions. Social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr are all mediums that use writing, pictures, and advertisements, ect. to communicate in a versatile way.

  14. Writing is the use of words through text. These words represent symbols that are attached to them and when they are put into text, they make meaning. The thing with writing is that the way the text is interpreted depends on the reader or audience. Not everyone thinks the same way and some people know more things than other people, which can also interfere with perception of the message. Writing is unique because it allows us to form a meaning without visuals. We actually create our own visuals. Sometimes, when writing is attached to visuals, it can change what the visual would mean if the text were not there. Writing gives us the ability to form a deeper meaning than what only pictures can.

    1. Text
Writing is still writing no matter what sort of text it is- handwritten or typed. It's the formation of words on paper or a screen. It’s turning a thought into words. Writing, essentially, is text.

    2. Message
The purpose of writing is to get across a message. The author has the intention of putting out an idea and hopes to influence the audience in some way. Messages are in anything ranging from novels to billboards. Messages can be interpreted in many different ways. Because so, it’s important for the author to spend time on the writing to make sure he’s getting the correct message out.

    3. Expression
Writing is a form of expression. It can be done through lyrics, poems, stories, a script, or an article. We have almost an instinct to express our ideas. We are constantly looking for things to say and want people to hear what we’re saying. Writing can be a way in which someone expresses themselves.

    4. Content
The content of writing is what the piece is about- the main idea or argument. Content can be in the form of books, magazines, websites, advertisements, etc. The content influences style and genre because everything extends from the content. A piece of writing first begins with the topic and content.

    5. Medium
The medium is the way in which the message is getting put across. It can be through technology, like facebook, twitter, tumblr, stumbleupon, etc., or it can be old fashioned print, like a magazine, catalog, or book.

  15. Writing is a unique form of expression. I personally view writing as an escape and as an easier way of vocalizing oneself. It is what sparks and cultivates creativity. Writing is a necessary ability and idea that helps people connect and share ideas. Writing involves the passing of knowledge and information from author to reader. Writing, although black and white, and in possession of only letters and often numbers, is the primary source of where our imagination creates color. If it weren't for writing, the stimulation needed for imagination wouldn't be present and also, the words to describe what we feel and see in our heads would not be present either. Overall, writing adds a special kind of zest to our lives, and a special point of view to any topic by any person. Writing, as controversial as it can be, allows for people to share and read ideas easily because writing is and can be interpreted however the reader pleases. All pieces of writing however need to possess the qualities to properly engage a reader and convey a message.

-Platforms: Every interesting and capturing piece of writing usually has different platforms. I believe platforms help authors create different angles to go off of, making it simpler for a reader to relate and engage in a piece. Sometimes when a reader begins to read a piece, they are totally unconvinced and may even disagree, but the variation of platforms could add more insight to the topic and allow the reader to see the point of view, or maybe even change their whole opinion they had to begin with.

-Purpose/Drive: If a piece has no purpose or drive then whats the point to it? Every reader wants to read something that is solid and concrete. A flaky paper or column is definitely going to disengage a reader, which defeats the purpose of writing in the first place. Before any author begins to write, they find a purpose and then properly back the purpose up with information in regards to the topic.

-Medium: How writing is conveyed is definitely a huge factor in successful writing. It is basically the first step to engage a reader... an author needs to make the crucial decision of how they want their writing to be expressed. Today, there are so many different ways to share things, whether it be by social media, magazines and books, blogs, newspaper, etc. I personally believe, medium is and should be selected more in regards to age and topic.

-Meaning: Every piece has to have meaning. There has to me the overall message that the author wants to put out. I think that a simple goal of a writer should be to have one concrete message that no matter what, is at least the one and only thing the reader picked up. This way, the author is assuring that they are successfully getting the point across, even if the smaller points aren't picked up. Not everyone who reads a piece knows exactly what the author is thinking about while writing. It's the authors job to provide enough meaning to the piece to allow the reader to engage and relate.

-Passion: All kinds of writing should involve passion. Putting down emotion and hard work is really what draws the line between a good and bad piece. The reader can always pick up the little things, whether it be attitude, style, humor, emotion, etc. Which is why authors should always give their all in their pieces, it is what truly makes or breaks writing.

Writing creates a world of meaning for this world of communication that we live in. Writing has such a dynamic meaning because of all the different forms it exists in. First, writing makes connections. It has to get the attention of a reader, someway, somehow. In today’s day in age, writing connects to people from computers, cell phones and apple applications. This is a prime example of how dynamic writing is, because 2 decades ago it existed in the form of letters from type writers, centuries earlier it was written in sand and on rocks. Connecting was the first goal centuries ago and still is now. Once the writer has connected with the reader- it communicates. It speaks and expresses and uses words to connect. In the communication process, writing can direct, enforce, imply and so much more. With that being said, most of the time, writing has a job. It can inform, clarify, persuade—the list goes on. Writing embodies people’s opinions, feelings and experiences. From simple traffic directions like “stop,” to deep dark stories written in fiction books. Writing connects, communicates and performs.

Communication: Writing communicates to an audience. Its initial mission is to connect with a reader and then it translates to whatever the reader absorbs. The relationship is formed and communications occur.

Information: Writing provides knowledge, experience, direction and so much more all thanks to the information it provides. Information plays so many roles in teaching and learning and all comes true with words in writing.

Experience: The beauty of writing is that it can take the reader on a journey. Audiences can experience with a writer in ways they did not know were possible. Sharing a person’s different interpretations of their senses through a journey can bring back memories, create day-dreams and open a whole new world to a reader.

Purpose: Writing has a job. When words are written, it is for a reason. Whether it is to direct, inform, persuade, express, writing is committed to getting a message across to its reader.

Subject: Writing has a subject, whether that subject is conveyed in a word, a thousand words, a headline or a subtitle, there is always a subject within writing.

Meaning: Every word has different parts to it (tone, connotation, denotation) and they each express a meaning. With that, writing defines and means something to the reader.

Create: With the individuality of the world, people’s thoughts proceed boundaries of their neighbors because of the different lives they live, worlds they imagine and experiences they’ve had. With that being said, writing creates through the mind of the author.

Tone: Writing provokes feelings and emotions that all connect to it’s tone. The underlying emotions expressed through writing help define it.

  17. To me, writing is an expression of information that can be expressed through many mediums. As such, it can often go hand in hand with other mediums such as video, internet, social media and others. A video often needs a script, and the internet and social media allows people to express thoughts in shorter, more compact formats. For those who find it difficult to express their thoughts through speech can still present their thoughts in the form of writing, more well expressed and flowing than if they were to speak it to another person. Writing is important because it also creates a record of one’s words, that can be referred back to if necessary.
    Key Terms:
Medium: This term represents the different forms within which writing can take. Writing can be found in many different mediums such as videos, speeches, social media, websites, podcasts, etc. The existence of different mediums allows the reader to experience writing in a myriad of different forms.
Audience: The audience is a very important part of writing. When one writes, they more often than not are addressing a certain audience who will in turn read the writing. The author must always consider their audience when writing, as they must appeal to said audience to keep them interested in what the author is trying to convey in their writing.
Context: Context is a necessary component when publishing writing. The words one writes must make sense in the context of the sentence being written. Without context, the audience will not understand the ideas the writer is trying to convey. Writing can often mean different things depending on the context in which it used.
Tone: An author’s tone can often determine the way their text is interpreted. Tone can often create a mood in a piece of writing; a piece with a melancholy tone may sadden the reader while a more aggressive tone may enrage the reader. Tone allows the author to give a voice to their writing, allowing the reader to take it in the way it was intended.
Subject: Nearly every piece of writing needs a subject, as without it the writing focuses on nothing. The subject creates a reason for something to be written, and often times the writing is centered around a particular subject. Subjects give a structure to writing that is very necessary.

  18. To me, writing is a means of expression, by which we are able to convey our thoughts and ideas. Through many different modes writing creates a series of widespread messages that make it easier to understand our environment, others, as well as ourselves.
What is special about writing, is that it allows us to communicate across a variety of different audiences, cultures, countries, political groups, social groups, societal classes etc. Writing enables us to share parts of ourselves with people we don’t know, and whom we may never know but we are still able to benefit from the extremely diverse perspectives of others in this way. Writing allows us to be educated and informed on topics that might not affect us personally on a daily basis, and doing so makes us better people. It allows us to create critique and commentary on the world that surrounds us today, and empower social change. Furthermore, the action of writing itself—transforming the ideas in our minds to physical words on paper—is intellectually stimulating, even curative, and makes us sharp, active thinkers in a world that is constantly advancing.
Terms that I think best define writing include:
    1. Voice is the subtle emphasis placed on the author’s personality throughout a piece.
    2. Genre refers to the type of work that the author is composing; affects the approach and style of the piece as a whole.
    3. Diction includes word selection that is often precise and specific that helps build the tone of the work.
    4. Purpose is the intention writers have for composing and the consequences the hope to see as a result of their writing.
    5. Audience is to whom the writer is speaking to in his work.
    6. Rhetoric is the manner in which our writing appeals to the ethics, logic, and emotions of our readers in order to lead them in a certain direction of thought.

To me, writing is essential to a society. Writing can reduce or empower. Writing has the ability to destroy and create. Writing is an essential tool to any modern day society. Almost every form of communication requires the written word. From twitter to snail mail to billboards to music, words are used to convey a message to an audience, no matter how large or small. I personally very much enjoy reading and writing and I wouldn’t know what to do if Stephen King didn't publish a new book every year or if Morrissey never sang, “…the sun shines out of our behinds.”.

    Key Terms

Diction: The words you use in an form of writing is always important. I have recently taken a rhetoric class and the words used to convey a certain message are pivotal for expressing a specific emotion, idea, setting, etc.

Voice: The way an author conveys a situation is all due to the voice. The voice helps the reader know what to feel and how to feel in a certain area of the writing. The voice may be what turns on or off your audience.

Tone: The tone and the voice could be considered a similar key term but I do believe that tone can make the audience feel a million ways.

Meaning: Why write something if there is no purpose? There has to be a drive behind the words. What is this for? Is this supposed to change peoples views on a subject? Is it to inform? Is it for fun? If there is no meaning, why write?

Objective: What is the objective after the writing is out there? Who is it for? What is ti meant to be for? For Martin Luther King Jr. it was to change oppressive laws and thoughts. For J.K. Rowling, it was to take the minds of millions to a not so distant magical world.

  20. Writing, in my opinion, has always been a form of expression and self-discovery. Whether I used it to journal ideas that I found difficult to express, or to write about knowledge I had acquired. I have consistently found writing to have a unique way of conveying messages. Just as a picture is worth a thousand words; a few words can paint a very vivid picture. An author can write heartfelt personal memoirs or they can create a beautiful new fictitious world. An advertisement can coin the phrase “I’m lovin’ it” to create a movement.

Writing inspires and informs. It is a way to both express oneself as well as lose oneself. Above all of that, writing is an art form. It is creative and while it can be an acquired skill it often requires a level of skill.

Context: All writing requires a level of understanding of context. It is important to recognize social events and constructs that may impact a text. It may be in regards to language usage or even something as simple as taboo topics that should or should not be discussed.

Medium: Although similar to context it is different in many ways. Medium is outrageously important when it comes to language use and format. Medium will also closely tie into the next keyword.

Audience: In my opinion, probably the most important keyword, audience is everything to a writer due to the fact that as a writer you constantly work to convey a message. You could also say that as a writer you work so that an audience receives your message. This is impossible to do without understanding your audience in the first place.

Message: A writer that lacks a definite plan may find himself or herself with a finished product that appears scattered or disorganized. A definite message can help eliminate these issues and help a writer appeal to their audience.

Creativity: After mastering and understanding these ideas writing needs a level of excitement to it. This is where the idea of writing being art is brought into play. Writing that lacks creativity is dull and escapes the purpose of expression or discovery amongst both the writer and the reader.

    Key terms:
    - speaker (who?)
    - audience (to whom?)
    - objective (to what end?)
    - occasion (brought on by what?)
    - scope (what type of subject matter is being addressed?)
    - tone (attitude of speaker toward subject)
    - style (aesthetic value, artful and distinctive use of language)
    - format (how content is organized)

Writing is a means of recording a series of thoughts or instructions for a specified or implicit audience. In rawer formats, namely speech and unspoken internal monologue, language is characterized by ephemerality; absent of transcription, these comparatively casual mediums of communication are arguably more susceptible to misinterpretations by whomever the speaker intends to address. Recording language through writing is a process that produces original source material to which both creator and audience may resort back to indefinitely for reference and recollection without having to rely on (notoriously fallible) memory—a quality that is imperatively useful when clarification or precision is called for.

From its very genesis, (in Mesopotamia around 3200 BC, to be exact) the institution of written language has served a revolutionary role in the progression of human civilization and socio-cultural mores. Long before the advent of modern technologies like television and the World Wide Web, writing was the only practical method of transcending geographical and temporal expanses whose distance would otherwise prohibit the relay of key sentiments and/or factual information to their prospective recipients. Outside of overtly pragmatic uses for written communication such as instructive manuals for the conveyance of technical information (e.g. blueprints, recipes, maps, car repair manuals, textbooks, etc.), writing is frequently employed for more artistic ends. Historically, creative writers like poets and literary authors have used the alphabets of their respective tongues to craft artful transcriptions of their direct experiences and impressions of the world in a highly stylized manner that underscored the heterogeneous nature of the innumberable subjectivities that comprise the human condition. In this vein, writing not only provides a convenient method of conveying thoughts but (if well-executed) has the capacity to foster empathy among its consumers, particularly in people whose empathic deficits are the by-product of cultural conditioning, stunted theories of mind, or a simple lack of exposure to perspectives/tones that differ significantly from their own. Above all else, this is what writing is useful for. At its best, its a tool for intellectual expansion whose modus operandi entails opening up a universe of content to audiences that is effectively limitless in scope, that broadens the epistemological horizons of each reader by continually challenging him or her to confront its alien landscapes, to thereby complicate and compound existing perspectives through the synthesis of foreign experiences and ideas.

  22. Writing is a way of expression, whether it be for the purpose of educating, explaining, persuading, or getting one’s ideas and thoughts out of the mind and onto something tangible. Writing is the key aspect to preserving thoughts between centuries; the ideas of Greek philosophers, the tellings of wars across the world, stories past down from generation to generation. Writing is the basis of all human communication. There are many aspects of writing that prove important, but many can be condensed into a list of five key terms.
Objection: What is the purpose of the piece your composing? Why is it something you want to want to share? The reason for why you’re writing a piece is crucial to the development of the text. Once identified, objection serves as the framework for how you construct your text.
Audience: Who is your text meant for? Once you determine why you’re creating a text, identifying the audience its meant for or is going to be read by helps you decide the tone you should use to make your writing the most effective.
Language: This is also crucial to the effectiveness of your argument as language makes your writing appropriate for the audience. For example, if you’re writing a research paper for a professor, you want to use language thats concise and informative while writing at an educated level using a spectrum of vocabulary. Conversely, if you’re writing something thats meant for a younger audience, you’ll want to use words that appeal more to them.
Medium: Where and how the text is published should reflect who its intended for. Through the proper medium, the piece becomes the most effective. For example, if your work is intended for millennials, the best medium to use would be online, possibly on a site such as Buzzfeed.
Criticism/Feedback: I personally believe that the only way to develop and grow in writing is practice and criticism. If a writer wants to be successful in all aspects mentioned above, practice is key; but to reach a bigger audience, a writer must adhere to feedback. Not always does the writer have to accept whatever is criticized, but it is important to understand how you can better your writing’s effectiveness. Criticism should be concluded by feedback from the audience and through feedback from self review.
